When it comes down to it, becoming a volunteer firefighter is about having the willingness and drive to make a difference.  You bring us the desire to help people, and we'll get you the training and skills you need to be successful.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can be a volunteer at KFD?

Any person RESIDING or working in the katonah fire district over AGE 16.

Members under 18 years old must have parent/guardian consent.


What will I do as a KFD volunteer?

Depending on your training and the department's needs, you might help with:

  • fire suppression activities
  • motor vehicle accidents
  • traffic incident management
  • apparatus maintenance 
  • public information and safety programs
  • fundraising and public events

KFD Members are expected to:

  • attend fire calls
  • participate in drills
  • attend the monthly deptartment meeting


What are the benefits of an active KFD membership?

Free Training & Equipment

Not only will the department pay for your gear and Firefighter 1 training, but KFD encourages and supports your continued fire service education in areas such as CPR, Engine Operations, Truck Operations, Emergency Medical Technician, and more!

Volunteer Firefighter Tax Benefits/Credits

Homeowners in the Town of Bedford who have been members of KFD and who have resided in town for two years or more are eligible for a 10% Volunteer Tax Exemption on county, town, and school taxes. 

Tuition and/or Student Loan Assistance

The Westchester County Higher Education Recruitment and Retention Opportunity (HERRO) program provides tuition reimbursement or student loan repayment assistance to active volunteer firefighters. 

MONTHLY PENSION AT age 65

Members may accumulate annual credit for alarms, drills, and meetings under the Length of Service Program (LOSAP), giving them an opportunity to receive a monthly pension at age 65.

What kind of training do I need?

NONE!

Once you are a member of the Katonah Fire Department, you will be trained-at no cost to you-by local and county firefighters.
